Coincidence
Thursday, July 30th, 2009I’m listening to this amazing audio book by Deepak Chopra called “The Spontaneous Fulfillment of Desire: Harnessing the Infinite Power of Coincidence.”
I think I was led to this in the first place because I want to know more about our collective consciousness and what brings people and situations together. I ended up getting even more than I planned for in discovering the depths of intention. I knew there had to be a reason why a bell chimes when I have certain thoughts or why I hear a siren in the distance when I have others.
Deepak had some really amazing examples of the connections between dogs and their owners…how a pet knows when you are leaving and when you are coming back. In certain situations, scientists monitored the house while an owner left, not knowing when they would return. The scientist would direct them where to go and when to come back. Somehow, the dog knew when to expect the owner and would sit by the front door anticipating their return.
The other part that is striking to me is the idea of intention and surrender. What Deepak is explaining, [which I might have a terrible time reconstructing,] is that just having an intention sets all things in motion to achieve that intention. Once it is set in motion, similar to a seed being planted in the earth, we only need to water and provide sunshine for the seed. We do not need to make it sprout and flower, it knows how to do this on it’s own. Having an intention and not trying to force it, somehow trusting that it will sprout and grow is the idea of surrender.
While all of this business about coincidence is swirling around in my head, I have a horrible dream about a cat who has busted back legs. In my dream, it was as if the legs had not fully formed. He was dragging himself by his front legs, struggling. Somehow, I had enough sensibility to realize it was a dream and change channels to something else. I wake up to read friend’s tweet that he saw a cat with busted back legs, probably at the same time I had the dream. And on it goes.
Deepak reiterated that luck is preparedness plus opportunity. Um. Now this is getting strange. I just wrote that line when someone IM’ed me that they have bad luck. [This is getting fun now.]
Anyway, so “luck” does not actually exist. We are constantly being presented with opportunities and it’s how we react to those opportunities that change the trajectory of our lives. It’s interesting that we can look back at our lives and see how certain events lead us to where we are. I guess the trick is to realize that what is happening right now is right, regardless of what it seems like when you’re in the middle of it.
